What Is It All About

Functional Medicine is a study of medicine that is focused on prevention and creating optimal health.

It offers a whole new way to understand and treat chronic illnesses like autoimmune disease, diabetes, hypertension, depression, anxiety, allergies and more.

In other words, Functional Medicine looks to find the underlying or root cause(s) of illness and recognizes that lifestyle factors (sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, toxicity and psycho-social, spiritual needs) may be a central piece of the puzzle that is contributing to a person’s health.

Our current healthcare system is primarily focused on illness rather than prevention.  It focuses on a traditional disease-centered approach, where a diagnosis is given based on symptomology and lab results. Patients are given powerful medications -with many side effects and complications - to 'treat' the isolated set of symptoms.

Therefore, the outcome is only to mask or suppress the symptoms, not to address "Why is there a problem, dysfunction or symptom in the first place?" The person is left feeling and believing that the state of their health is in a pill and there are no other choices.

Foremost, the diagnosis that is given is not the cause, it's a label.

In fact, the cause can be that of many.

Research has clearly identified that inflammation is present in illness.  Therefore, inflammation is a KEY signal that your body is out of balance.

In Functional Medicine we understand that inflammation can be triggered by many causes, such as an imbalanced gut flora, nutritional status, or toxicity to name a few.  These imbalances pave the road for chronic illness to develop.

Therefore, Functional Medicine goes beyond just suppressing symptoms. It shifts to a more of a patient-centered approach, where the focus is on why there is an issue in the first place, compared to just looking at what's wrong.

Don't get me wrong, medications do have a place, but it is clear that the diagnosis-prescription model or the 'one-size fits all approach' to healthcare is not working, as chronic illness rates continue to rise.

Consider the following CDC (Centers of Disease Control & Prevention) statistics, about one in two Americans now suffers from a chronic disease, four in ten suffers from multiple chronic diseases and almost 25 percent of kids now have a chronic condition. CDC Link

A person can't simply supplement their way to health.

A health coach is an expert in lifestyle behaviors, self-motivation, and an overall understanding of health and wellness. Through the use of science-based strategies and techniques, health coaches help you identify what is important in your life, what are your internal strengths, values, and goals, but most importantly your own unique WHY behind your desire and reasons for change.

Change can often be very difficult, sometimes feels downright impossible, even if it is something you really want. The benefits of health coaching is to help you get "unstuck" by helping you figure out what are the obstacles keeping you from reaching your health goals. When you get "unstuck" is when change really happens.


Did you know there is no required licensing for health coaches, so anyone can call themselves a health coach with little to no training.

As a NBC-HWC, National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, I have met the rigorous education and training through a 12 month Functional Medicine credited, approved program.  With a curriculum emphasis in Functional Medicine, Functional Nutrition, Mind-Body Medicine and Positive Psychology Coaching.

Futhermore, the National Board Certification credential (NBC-HWC), in partnership with the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), represents the highest set of standards, ethics and continued education requirements for health coaches. So, you can be reassured I'm up-to-date with the most current research, knowledge and strategies to help you improve your health and wellness.

I don't diagnosis, prescribe or alter medications. The goal is to restore your health naturally and safely through lifestyle modifications.


A health coach focuses on behavior change, goal-setting strategies, educational resources, and accountability to foster lifestyle improvements to address health issues. A nutritionist implements nutrition-based guidelines - such as a specific food plan. The unique difference, is that a Functional Medicine Health Coach addresses root-cause of disease; therefore, emphases is on a bio-individual lifestyle plan to identify how certain foods and lifestyle habits affects the client's over-all health.

As a result, I have seen first-hand with my clients and myself, when you focus on lifetyle principles to treat the root cause, many times the symptoms seem to take care of themselves.

Optimal health and wellness is NOT complicated.  However, it does require giving the body what it's designed to have in a way that maximizes healing.
