HeartMath: Create Daily Coherence

"Sometimes the heart knows things that the mind could never explain." - Kanjeet

Are you running on empty most days?

Do you feel over-whelm, anxious, worry or stress in your life and to decompress do

you find yourself flying off the handle with your loved ones or embracing unhealthy habits?

Stress affects are entire body - physically, mentally and emotionally.

Would you like a strategy to help you

As a HeartMath® Certified Practitioner I can help you do just that!

HeartMath® Institute is a non-profit educational and research organization in California that was founded in 1991.  It's based on more than 25 years of published, peer-review research (resource library) referencing the heart-brain communication and its relationship to manage stress, increase coherence, build resiliency, improve health-related outcomes, achieve optimal performance and wellbeing.

Often it’s our brain where we think it’s at. Meaning our minds, our behaviors, our personality, our consciousness are all controlled by our brain. However, based on years of research, we realize there is a very important connection how the heart-brain communicate.  A way of working together to regulate emotional and cognitive responses. Basically, our heart can make our brain work better. It is about creating a balance between our mind and emotions.

Emotions and lifestyle habits have a powerful effect on the human body and actually cause a shift in our heart rhythms. HeartMath® tools and techniques focus on Heart Rate Variability (HRV) – a measure of the time and intensity between each heartbeat.  This is very different from your heart rate, which is the number of times your heart beats per minute.

Surprisingly, a healthy heart shows a variation in beat-to-beat changes between heartbeats, rather than being completely regular.  HRV is a wellness marker that is controlled by the autonomic nervous system (ANS).  There are two divisions of the ANS: sympathetic (fight-or-flight) and the parasympathetic (rest and digest). Stress of any kind triggers the sympathetic and causing a lower HRV.  Relaxation triggers the parasympathetic and causes a higher HRV.

Therefore, a higher HRV score is an indicator of a balanced nervous system and research has shown it is associated with longevity, resilience, and people are less likely to develop chronic conditions and mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

The key is Self-Regulation.

When you are experiencing over reactivity to situations or depleting emotions – stress, anger, depression, worry, over-whelm for example, you are causing your body to be in a state of fight-or-flight mode. Which leads to an increased disorder of the heart’s rhythms and nervous system. This dysregulation is a major contributor to a person’s physical and emotional health. For many, this dysregulation becomes so familiar that it essentially becomes a defining part of who they are. When a body is under a constant state of dysregulation the heart and circulatory systems operate far less than full potential. A constant low HRV most likely indicates you are less resilient to stressful events, which in the long run is a main contributor to illness and disease.

However, on the flip side, when you intentionally shift to positive or renewing emotions – gratitude, joy, appreciation, kindness - synchronizations happens between the heart’s rhythm and nervous system. This shift, leads to a favorable cascade of events on the entire body – neural, hormonal, and biochemical. This synchronized state is what scientists call coherence.

According to studies, coherence leads to more mental clarity, better problem-solving abilities, improved physical performance, and better ways of handling stressful situations. The effects can be both immediate and long lasting. Here is a great link that explains even more behind the science!
